Not everyone at the Billboard Music Awards was a Belieber. During the televised show on May 19, CeeLo Green presented Justin Bieber with the first-ever Milestone Award and a large chunk of the audience booed the pop singer as he waited awkwardly to give his acceptance speech.

Bieber, hidden behind dark sunglasses, looked perplexed at the audience’s mixed reaction. He even squeezed CeeLo Green’s shoulder for a second, seemingly to grasp the situation.

“I’m 19 years old. I think, uh, I think I’m doing a pretty good job. And basically, from my heart I really just want to say it should really be about the music. It should really be about the craft, the craft that I’m making,” Bieber said.

“This is not a gimmick. I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously,” Bieber continued as he placed his hand against his heart and thick gold chain. “And all this other bull should not be spoken of.”

All the other bull is probably why the audience disapproved that Bieber won the award for musical ingenuity and innovation over fellow nominees Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars who haven’t dealt with bull as of late. Some of Bieber’s recent bull includes marijuana found on his tour bus in Stockholm in April. His other odd behavior—that suggests he’s kind of losing it or letting fame get to his head—is when Bieber wore a bank-robberish Chanel ski mask and jaunty fedora two days before the marijuana incident. Before that, his monkey was seized in Germany. Michael Jackson anyone? Or maybe the booing audience remembered Bieber’s self-absorbed hope that Anne Frank, the teen author who died in a Holocaust concentration camp, would have been a Belieber, too.

It wasn’t until the end of his speech that Bieber showed a sign of humility. Bieber closed by thanking his mom, dad and Jesus Christ, at which point he finally removed his sunglasses and the audience cheered—most likely because he thanked Jesus and not the latter. “Fans, you’re incredible.”

Earlier that night at the Las Vegas awards show, Bieber received Top Male Artist, presented by Miley Cyrus. So Bieber, don’t worry—your die-hard fans (and Miss Gomez, for now) still really like you.
